Itinerary:

 

Day 1   

Arrival in Petrozavodsk. Accommodation in hotel. Breakfast. Bus city tour “Three centuries of Petrozavodsk”, visit to the private art gallery “The Doll’s House” of Tatyana Kalinina (unique exhibition “The house spirits of Kizhi”).

Lunch. Walking tour of the historic part of Petrozavodsk “Kizhi Island in the heart of Karelia”. During the tour you will learn a great deal about the preserved and lost monuments of history and architecture of Petrozavodsk, those outstanding people, whose life was connected with Petrozavodsk and Zaonezhje, and the city and folk culture of the beginning of the XXth century. The tour participants will also learn about the plans for revival of traditional craft technologies.

Day 2

Breakfast. Checking out of the hotel. Departure to Medvezhjegorsk en route Petrozavodsk – Martian Waters health resort – Girvas village - Medvezhjegorsk.

You will visit the first Russian health resort “Martian Waters” established by Peter the Great. Following his design a wooden church was built there, which has been successfully preserved till our days. In Girvas village you will see the famous Girvas volcano, which was active more than 2 billion years ago. It is one of the most unique and the oldest volcanoes of Europe.    

Arrival in Medvezhjegorsk. Accommodation in hotel. Lunch.

Bus tour “The City at the Bear Mountain”. During the tour you will visit unique fortification constructions set up by the Finnish Army in 1942-1944. The tour also takes you to the White Sea – Baltic Sea canal and the mass execution place called Sandarmoh where many repressed USSR residents were shot in 1937-1938. In Medvezhjegorsk you are welcome to purchase souvenirs. Don't miss the famous embroidery of Zaonezhje!

Day 3

Breakfast. Checking out of the hotel. Bus tour “Silver ring of Zaonezhje”.

The tour takes you to Shunga village, the homeland of Zaonezhje embroidery, and Tolvuya village where you will be entertained by the kids' folk group. You will visit the shungite deposit, which unique natural qualities preserve an eco friendly environment of Zaonezhje area. And don't forget to taste the curative spring water at the “Sovereign Keys”!

In the village of Velikaya Guba in “Zaonezhje izba-house” you will meet with the local folk group.

Lunch in the peasant’s house (on the menu: special Zaonezhje fish, tea with kalitka-pies and pastries)

15.00 – departure to the Kizhi Island by hydrofoil (travel time: 20 min)

Tour of the open-air Kizhi museum-preserve with the visit to the Intercession Church and ethnographical exhibitions.

The Kizhi complex is a real miracle. You will be amazed by the grandeur of the church complex of the Kizhi Pogost including a 22-dome Transfiguration Church, a 9-dome Intercession Church and the bell tower. The Island will give you the sense of identity and diversity of culture of different places of Karelia. Cult, dwelling and household traditional constructions – the monuments of wooden architecture - were brought here from other places of Karelia.   

18.00 – departure to Petrozavodsk by hydrofoil (travel time: 80 min). Transfer to the train station.
